What is Atomoxetine?

Atomoxetine is used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine may also be used for other purposes not listed in this Medication Guide.

Important information

Do not use atomoxetine if you have taken an MAOI such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine within the last 14 days.

Atomoxetine may cause new or worsening psychosis (unusual thoughts or behaviors), especially if you have a history of depression, mental illness, or bipolar disorder.

Before you take this medication

Do not use atomoxetine if you have taken an MAOI within the last 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAOIs include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.

You should not use atomoxetine if you are allergic to it or if you:

• have serious heart or blood vessel problems;
• have narrow-angle glaucoma;
• have pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor).

Atomoxetine has caused strokes, heart attacks, and sudden death in some individuals. Tell your doctor if you:

• have heart problems or a congenital heart defect;
• have high blood pressure;
• have a family history of heart disease or sudden death.

Tell your doctor if you ever:

• had depression, mental illness, bipolar disorder, or psychosis;
• had suicidal thoughts or actions;
• had low blood pressure;
• had liver disease.

Some people experience suicidal thoughts while taking atomoxetine. Your doctor will need to regularly monitor your progress. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to any changes in your mood or symptoms.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. If you are pregnant, your name may be entered into a pregnancy registry to track the effects of atomoxetine on the baby.

It may not be safe to breastfeed while using this medication. Ask your doctor about potential risks.

Atomoxetine is not approved for use in persons under 6 years of age.

How should I take atomoxetine?

Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction manuals. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medication exactly as directed.

Take the medication at the same time every day with a full glass of water.

Atomoxetine is usually taken once daily in the morning or twice daily, in the morning and late afternoon. Follow your doctor’s instructions.

You can take atomoxetine with or without food.

Swallow the capsule whole and do not crush, chew, break, or open it. Inform your doctor if you have difficulty swallowing the capsules.

Your doctor will need to monitor your progress regularly. Your blood work, heart rate, blood pressure, height, and weight may also need to be checked frequently.

Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I forget a dose?

Take the medication as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.

Side effects of atomoxetine

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.

Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disturbances, or if you are impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), depressed, or have thoughts of suicide or self-harm.

Atomoxetine can affect growth in children. Tell your doctor if your child is not growing normally while using this medication.

Call your doctor immediately if you:

• Signs of heart problems include chest pain, difficulty breathing, and feeling like you might faint;
• Signs of psychosis include hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real), new behavioral problems, aggression, hostility, paranoia;
• Liver problems include abdominal pain (upper right area), itching, flu-like symptoms, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
• Experiencing painful or difficult urination;
• Experiencing a painful erection or one that lasts longer than 4 hours (this is a rare side effect).

Common side effects can include:

• Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, constipation;
• Dry mouth, loss of appetite;
• Mood changes, fatigue;
• Dizziness;
• Problems with urination;
• Impotence, difficulty achieving an erection.

What other medications affect atomoxetine?

Inform your doctor about all current medications and any you start or stop taking, especially:

• an antidepressant;
• Asthma medication;
• Blood pressure medication;
• a cold or allergy medication containing a decongestant such as pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine.
